FIR Interview: Craig Jolley on marketing automation
The challenges of today’s marketer—particularly in B2B circles—have grown increasingly complicated. From altered cycles to the volume of information available to a prospect to a growing disconnect between marketing and sales, the complexities of marketing have made it harder and harder to handle without the aid of systems that can analyze data and handle a variety of behind-the-scene tasks.
This technology-enabled approach is known as “marketing automation,” something FIR listeners in the Google+ Community told us was of interest to them. In this FIR interview, co-host Shel Holtz spoke with his longtime friend, Craig Jolley, manager of business development at ngage Marketing Services about what marketing automation does and the conditions that have led to its adoption.

FIR Interview: Jean Valin and Dan Tisch on the Melbourne Mandate
At the World Public Relations Forum 2012 in Melbourne, Australia, almost 800 public relations practitioners endorsed the Melbourne Mandate, a call to action of new areas of value for public relations and communication management. It was co-created by 1,000 people from 30 countries over the course of a year.
In this FIR Interview, co-hosts Neville Hobson and Shel Holtz discuss this Global Alliance initiative with the two architects of the Melbourne Mandate, Jean Valin and Dan Tisch.
The interview begins with Valin and Tisch explaining what the Global Alliance is and its work.
The two men outlined the purpose and scope of the Melbourne Mandate and its set of roles, responsibilities and principles designed to provide practitioners with a new mandate to define and maintain an organization’s character and values; build a culture of listening and engagement; and instil responsible behaviours by individuals and organizations.
The wide-ranging conversation embraced discussion on the Mandate’s three pillars of character, responsibility - in particular, about trust and ethics - and listening; the Integrity Index, a tool designed to measure whether an organization lives up to its stated values in the minds of its internal and external stakeholders; and the Professional Development Wheel, a guide to the skills professionals need in order to practise to the full scope of the Mandate.
Valin and Tisch also spoke of the challenges in bringing the Melbourne Mandate to the attention of a wider audience within the public relations profession, and stimulating broader interest in it.

FIR Interview: Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer, CEO of AirPR
AirPR has raised a bit of a stir since it was launched with the proposition that startups, unable to spend the kind of money it costs to engage a public relations agency, can do better by connecting with an independent PR practitioner listed on the AirPR site. A sort of online dating service for startups seeking PR, AirPR is the brainchild of Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer, who last year raised $1 million in seed funding for the site.
In a Ragan.com post, Arment-Dietrich CEO Gini Dietrich outlined the pros and cons of AirPR. On the one hand, she wrote, it commoditizes the work of public relations, the 3-4-week timeframe from contact to delivery is inadequate for the launch of a new product or service, the ratings provided by clients don’t include references other prospects can call, and the contracts are so short-term they’re not adequate for a consult to “make payroll on or count on for cash flow.” On the plus side, it dismisses the RFP process and “provides an opportunity for solopreneurs, freelancers, and boutique firms to compete for big dollars without having to pull their entire teams off client work to complete an RFP.” (Gini has decided to give it a try.)
In this FIR interview, Neville Hobson and Shel Holtz speak with Fouladgar-Mercer about his vision for AirPR, how it works, the concerns that have been raised, how the business is faring and what he sees for the future.
